Semaglutide has been around for years! It wasn’t until last summer that it became a household name because Hollywood Celebrities and Upper East Side moms started using it to shed pounds. What is Semaglutide?

While this medication has been breaking the internet and social media, many people are still unaware of what it is. Semiglutide has first gained approval from the FDA as a treatment to type 2 diabetes, helping control blood sugar levels. Additionally, it has been used to help reduce the risk of a stroke, heart attack, and heart disease.

How does it work for weight loss?

Semaglutide can help shed weight in three ways, shutting down hunger cues, regulating sugar, and helping you feel fuller.

Whenever we eat food, the appetite centers in our brains are activated. We chew and swallow as much as we can until we feel full. The feeling of fullness occurs because release a gut hormone called GPL-1 is released and shuts down hunger cues. For some people, these cues are not released because their bodies aren’t producing enough levels of GPL-1 to feel satisfied, leading them to overeat.

When Semaglutide is injected, it mimics the GLP-1 hormone to affect the receptors and decrease the feeling of hunger. Patients experience fewer cravings, less hunger, and better control of food intake.

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called incretin mimetics. These medications can help with digestion and metabolic activity by helping your pancreas release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels spike.

The injection helps slow down the movement of food through the stomach as well! This gives your body more time to feel fuller and consume fewer calories. The end result is a strong reduction in appetite that allows you to feel more full and energized while eating much less.
